Are we supplying our children the right books?

We as parents hold enormous responsibilities, in terms of what we teach our children and what we supply them to read. This means that we must safeguard them from any materials or books that will cause any harm.

“O you who believe! Safeguard yourselves and your families...”

(Quran 66:6)

Surely, books have the power to benefit children in many ways. As a parent, reading to your child is one of the most important things you can do to prepare him/her for life. Children should have as many experiences with books as they can, whether they're being read to or reading a book themselves. However, presenting your child with ‘any’ book without contemplating on it may bring them more harm than benefit.

I will share with you few things to contemplate on before presenting your child a book.

- Is this book age appropriate for my child i.e. for toddlers picture books

- Does this book contain any evil i.e. magic, promoting lies, fairy-tales, foul language and so on

-Would this book teach my child new things about their way of life and about their world

- Would this book encourage positive traits in their character

"A man only learns in two ways, one by reading, and the other by association with smarter people"

Will Rogers

Children’s education is mainly based on books, they learn from books, the more you read them the more knowledge they gain each day. Therefore, giving your child the right education can help them learn about the important individuals in their lives, learn about their world, live a more peaceful life and deal with life’s challenges easily and maturely. Inshaa Allah (God Willing).

Keep in mind when educating children, it should be done with love and compassion. This will make children to love and respect their parents and it will give them enjoyment in learning.

“The one who has no compassion will not be treated mercifully”

(Prophet Muhammad - Sahih Bukhari)
